Ritas Bazaar has dated this Masons Ironstone Cider Mug to the Georgian era.

It is decorated in Mason's sought-after Red Scale Conversation Group, with iron-red scale panels framing Chinese garden scenes. The printed decoration is hand-enriched in polychrome enamels; the inner rim and hydra handle retain warm orange lustre.

The underside bears Mason's rare early wide-spaced black Crown-and-Banner mark, MASON'S / PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA, confirming a date of circa 1815–1825. The unusual combination of the substantial cider-mug form, Red Scale Conversation Group pattern and hydra handle makes this one of Mason's more ambitious early chinoiserie wares.

Dimensions: Weight 1052 g. Height 12.8 cm. Width including handle 20.5 cm. Diameter 17.5 cm. The substantial body gives a clear, resonant ring when carefully tapped.
Condition: Several small firing cracks at the points where the handle joins the body, wear to the gilt rim and a few pinhead enamel losses. The brown kiln-stilt / glaze-contraction line beneath the lower handle attachment is an original firing feature, not later damage. Examined under UV. Otherwise in excellent antique condition.
