Antique Narrow Georgian Style Oak Dresser Base | Bracket Feet

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique dresser base in oak, made in the Georgian country manner, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and lovely character.

It offers two crossbanded frieze drawers above a pair of cupboard doors, each drawer fitted with brass swan-neck handles on oval backplates and a matching brass escutcheon. The doors have locks with a key and open to reveal a single shelf on each side, giving generous storage for china, glassware or table linen.

The cupboard doors are set with fielded panels of richly figured flame mahogany, beautifully contrasting with the oak framing. The moulded top has cleated ends, and the piece stands on shaped bracket feet joined by a cut-out apron. The back is made of traditional pine planks.

The oak displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, rich colour, while the mahogany panels show a striking flame figure, both with a pleasing aged patina.

Its shallow depth makes it ideal for a hallway, dining room or kitchen where space is limited. Presented in good condition, it is a very desirable piece, perfect as a sideboard, hall cupboard or serving piece.

This 1920 Georgian style oak dresser base is made in the English country manner from oak, mahogany, brass, and pine. The warm brown timber displays a figured grain, complemented by flame mahogany panels, brass swan-neck handles on oval backplates, brass keyhole escutcheons, and shaped bracket feet. The design includes two crossbanded frieze drawers above a pair of fielded panel cupboard doors, a moulded top with cleated ends, and a cut-out apron. Measuring 84.5 cm high, 128.5 cm wide, and 33.5 cm deep, this shallow furniture piece serves as a sideboard, hall cupboard, or serving piece in a hallway, dining room, or kitchen where space is limited. The interior holds a single shelf on each side behind locks with a key, providing storage for china, glassware, or table linen. The back is constructed from traditional pine planks, and the visible surfaces carry a pleasing aged patina. The piece sits steadily on bracket feet joined by the cut-out apron beneath the cupboard doors.

FAQs

A Georgian oak dresser base is a low wooden cabinet originating from the eighteenth century, characteristically constructed with a combination of top drawers and lower cupboards or open shelving, supported by simple bracket or turned feet.

Traditional pieces were crafted primarily from solid oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, fielded door panels, and solid brass hardware such as swan-neck drop handles and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic Georgian examples exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular dovetail joints inside drawers, historic saw marks on rear panels, natural patination around wear areas, and original brass fittings or evidence of period replacements.

An oak dresser base functions effectively as a sideboard in dining rooms, an entryway storage table in hallways, or a media console in living spaces, pairing well with contemporary artwork, neutral wall shades, and modern ceramics.

Preserve the wood finish by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a beeswax polish along the grain two to three times a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
