This original oil painting on canvas dates to circa 1960 and depicts the defence of Hougoumont during the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, signed by artist J. K. Tivey in the lower-right corner with an inscription in the lower-left. The military realism style scene portrays red-coated British soldiers, fallen figures in uniform, a brick gateway, and a distant burning building under a pale sky. The canvas is housed in a substantial gilt wood frame decorated with ornate raised floral and foliate mouldings. The composition measures 81.7 cm high, 59.6 cm wide, and 3.8 cm deep. Suitable for display in a gentleman's library or study, the artwork mounts directly onto a wall above the mantel to bring historical interest to a traditional interior. The multicoloured palette incorporates rich reds, blues, earthy browns, and greens, contrasted with the metallic gold finish of the decorative frame mouldings.

FAQs

Napoleonic battle scene paintings depict historic military engagements from the early nineteenth century, focusing on tactical troop formations, regimental uniforms, and defensive positions such as the North Gate at Hougoumont.

These artworks are traditionally created using oil pigments applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within a moulded plaster and gilded timber frame.

Identification involves examining canvas weave density, stretcher bar joinery, artist signatures, paint craquelure, and the historical accuracy of uniforms, weaponry, and regimental insignia.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece or side table in a study or dining room, surrounded by neutral wall paint and dark timber furniture.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting the surface and frame gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush.
