Scumble Painted Victorian Kitchen Dresser C1880

19th century
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

An attractive Victorian kitchen dresser in its original scumble paint which is sort of toffee toned in colour with original historic wear in the right places.

This one is not too large and would work well in a cottage kitchen, hallway or even living room with its flight of 3 drawers and cupboard space. Rather enjoying the grand looking back with its pediment and swirls finish.

Condition is good with one of the drawer knobs having a chip out of it, wear to the little feet and base and historic paint loss in places from usage. We have carefully cleaned the dresser making sure it is ready for placing.

A great looking little dresser c1880.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

This Victorian kitchen dresser is constructed from pine and finished with a warm brown toffee-toned scumble glaze faux graining. Dating from 1880, the rustic farmhouse piece stands on turned bun feet and features a galleried splashback shelf with a pediment, three graduated drawers with turned wooden knobs, and a single cupboard door with a small turned wooden pull. Signs of age include historic paint loss from usage, a chip on one of the drawer knobs, and wear to the little feet and base. The proportions measure 126 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 125.5 cm to the pediment top. Practical storage space makes the dresser well-suited for everyday use in a cottage kitchen, hallway, or living room. The layout provides both closed cupboard storage and a flight of three drawers for organizing household items, while the upper galleried shelf offers a display surface. The clean lines and traditional joinery fit comfortably into various country or period interiors.

Scumble glazing is a 19th-century decorative paint technique where a translucent glaze was applied over a lighter base coat and combed or brushed to imitate figured timber grains, such as oak or mahogany, on utilitarian pine.

Victorian kitchen dressers were predominantly constructed from solid softwoods like pine or deal, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber back panels, and turned wooden drawer handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship including hand-sawn timber surfaces, original shrinkage gaps along joinery, hand-cut dovetails, and genuine surface wear across painted finishes.

An antique kitchen dresser can be incorporated into modern dining or living areas by utilizing the flat top surface to feature contemporary ceramics, artwork, or table lamps to create visual contrast.

To preserve scumble-painted surfaces, dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply neutral beeswax sparingly, avoiding chemical cleansers, water exposure, and direct heat sources.
