A Fine Bronze Study of a Partridge by Ferdinand Pautrot, Circa 1860

19th century
Description

A finely modelled nineteenth-century bronze study of a partridge by Ferdinand Pautrot (1832–1874), the distinguished French animalier sculptor celebrated for his naturalistic representations of wildlife.

The sculpture depicts a partridge stepping cautiously through luxuriant foliage, its alert demeanour conveying the instinctive vigilance characteristic of the bird. The modelling is highly accomplished, with carefully observed anatomical detail and finely worked plumage capturing the texture and form of the bird with considerable naturalism. The poised stance and attentive expression lend the composition a convincing sense of movement and quiet animation.

The partridge is mounted on a shaped rectangular bronze base, richly modelled with naturalistic foliage that complements the subject and provides an integral setting for the composition. The detailed treatment of the vegetation enhances the sculptural depth and demonstrates Pautrot’s skill in combining animal studies with their natural surroundings.

The base is signed Pautrot at the front left-hand corner. The underside is baize-lined to protect the supporting surface and preserve the polished finish.

A particularly appealing example of French nineteenth-century animalier sculpture, this bronze combines fine observational modelling with an engaging naturalistic subject. Its compact proportions, detailed execution and sculptor’s signature make it a desirable addition to a collection of French bronzes or nineteenth-century wildlife sculpture.

The Animalier movement emerged in 19th-century France, characterized by artists who specialized in creating anatomically precise sculptures of animals. Led by sculptors such as Antoine-Louis Barye and Ferdinand Pautrot, these craftsmen elevated wildlife sculpture into a recognized fine art genre, capturing naturalistic poses and detailed textures.

These sculptures were primarily cast in bronze using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods. After casting, the pieces underwent hand-chasing to refine surface details such as feathers or fur, followed by the application of chemical patinas to achieve rich brown, dark, or green tones.

Authentic pieces typically feature cast artist signatures integrated into the base, sharp detail from skilled hand-chasing, and natural patina wear in high-touch areas. Genuine period bronzes also display appropriate weight and seamless construction around the cast base.

A dark bronze statuette serves as a refined focal point when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood bookcase, or a traditional desk. Pairing the bronze with organic materials, neutral wall palettes, or tailored joinery creates a balanced contrast between antique craft and modern design.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush is recommended to remove dirt from detailed crevices. To protect the original patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently, avoiding liquid polishes or abrasive chemicals.
