CKB Ltd Emporium & Collectables has dated this Cast Brass Elephant Sculpture to the 1930s.
This attractive decorative elephant is modelled standing on four sturdy legs, with its trunk raised dramatically upwards, two long curved tusks, exaggerated outstretched ears and a slender, gently curved tail.

The sculpture has considerable character, with expressive, deeply outlined eyes, finely incised detailing along the trunk and distinctive branching lines across the body, shoulders and legs representing the folds and texture of the elephant's skin.

Construction and craftsmanship
Produced in hollow cast brass, the elephant is substantial for its size, weighing 1,222g.
The sculpture displays characteristics of traditional workshop metalworking, including separately formed and attached elements, visible casting joins and finishing marks.

The undersides of the four feet are relatively flat and show a mixture of rough casting texture and pronounced grinding or filing marks, consistent with finishing after manufacture.
The warm golden brass surface contrasts with darker patination retained within the incised decoration, around the eyes, beneath the ears and along the trunk.

Origin and age
Believed to originate from India, where decorative brass elephant sculptures have a long tradition of production.
The raised trunk is traditionally associated with good fortune, prosperity and protection.

Stylistically, the piece is consistent with 20th-century Indian decorative brassware, provisionally dated circa 1940–1970. The precise date, maker and workshop have not been established.
Condition
Good decorative vintage condition overall, with visible surface wear and imperfections consistent with previous handling, display and possible deterioration of an earlier surface coating.

There are numerous surface scratches, small scuffs, darker marks, tarnishing and localised discolouration throughout the brass.
The surface displays scattered areas of apparent coating loss, including irregular pale golden and copper-coloured patches, particularly around the face, ears, shoulders and body.

There are also several distinctive, hard, raised greenish deposits resembling dried droplets, most noticeably around the legs, lower body and recessed decoration. Their precise composition is unknown, although they appear firmly adhered to the surface and have been left undisturbed rather than risk damage through cleaning.

Dark oxidation and accumulated deposits are present within the engraved detailing, around the eyes, inside the ears and along some casting joins.
The underside of the feet displays rough casting surfaces, filing marks and small casting irregularities.

Both tusks are present, together with the trunk, ears and tail. No major structural breakage is apparent from visual inspection, although the piece has not been professionally examined or restored.
Despite its surface imperfections, the elephant retains considerable decorative appeal, with the aged finish lending contrast to the golden brass and emphasising the sculptural details.

Please study the accompanying photographs, which form an important part of the condition description.
