Ritas Bazaar has dated this Old Paris Porcelain Cup to the 19th Century.

The rural scenes recall landscape imagery associated with Jean-Baptiste Pillement. Orange panels carry antique martial trophies: a wyvern, a curved horn crossed with a pole-arm, a laurel-wreathed mask with weapons, and a standard-like trophy. No comparable porcelain design combining rural landscapes with this particular group of martial motifs has been located in the museum collections and decorative-arts literature reviewed to date.

Together, the imagery may represent the classical idea that military success protects peace and rural life. The design may have formed part of a specially commissioned service, possibly for a high-ranking military commander.

Related Paris litron cups and saucers in The Metropolitan Museum of Art are dated 1800–1810. The present pair is a later example of this refined Paris taste. The saucer bears a small underglaze-blue letter C, a technical mark.

Dimensions: Cup — 105 g; Height 5.8 cm; Width including handle 8.5 cm; Diameter 6.1 cm. Saucer — 111 g; Height 2.8 cm; Diameter 12.6 cm.
Condition: Very good antique condition. The cup has slight gilt wear to the handle and rim; its painted scenes and interior gilding are very well preserved. The saucer has minor gilt wear, while its painted landscapes and orange-ground motifs remain excellent. UV examination revealed no cracks, restoration or repainting.
