This Victorian sculpture belongs to the Animalier style, modelled as a pair of greyhounds in a playful interaction. The piece consists of a spelter zinc alloy body finished in a dark brown tone with a warm patina, mounted upon a moulded oval base depicting a textured terrain. Visible details include muscular canine forms, pointed ears, curled tails, and outstretched limbs caught in mid-motion. The entire object measures 9 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Positioned on a flat surface, the decorative group suits placement upon a mantelpiece within a gentleman's library or study. The compact footprint allows easy integration into traditional or contemporary interiors as an ornamental desk accessory or shelf display.

The Animalier movement originated in 19th-century France, focusing on detailed, naturalistic portrayals of animals. Spelter, a zinc alloy, gained widespread popularity during the late Victorian era as an accessible material for casting decorative animal figures for domestic interiors.

Spelter is primarily composed of a zinc alloy cast into detailed moulds. The final piece is finished with a chemical patina, bronzing lacquer, or painted finish to give it the outward appearance of traditional bronze.

Authentic antique spelter exhibits hand-finished casting seams and natural patination wear where light zinc reveals itself beneath the surface coat. Spelter is noticeably lighter than solid bronze and produces a duller sound when tapped gently.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a mantelpiece, dark wood console table, or stacked on books within a modern bookcase. The dark patina provides a strong visual anchor that complements both classic and contemporary neutral schemes.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean bristle brush to clear dust from detailed areas. Avoid using liquid polishes, water, or chemical solvents, as these can strip the original patinated surface layer.
