Cheshire Antiques Consultant Ltd has dated this Neapolitan Vesuvius Gouache Painting to the 19th Century.
Description
An atmospheric 19th-century Italian Neapolitan School gouache painting depicting the dramatic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1844, with Mediterranean sailing vessels navigating the Bay of Naples beneath the imposing volcanic landscape.

Executed in the manner of Camillo de Vito, this historic composition reflects the celebrated Neapolitan tradition of volcanic landscape painting, particularly associated with the Grand Tour and the fascination of European travellers with southern Italy.
The maritime setting adds both historical interest and a sense of scale to the dramatic volcanic spectacle.

Historical Background
Mount Vesuvius was one of the most frequently depicted natural landmarks in 19th-century Italian art. Travellers visiting Naples sought painted views of its eruptions as reminders of the region's remarkable scenery and geological history.

The eruption of 1844 provides the historical subject of this work, placing it within the wider artistic tradition of Neapolitan topographical gouaches.
