Originating from the 17th to 18th century during the late Ming or early Qing dynasty, this Chinese scholar's group is cast from a heavy high-copper alloy bronze with a rich dark brown patination and hand-chiseled detailing. The sculptural composition depicts a caparisoned elephant accompanied by two young climbing boys, complete with a washing broom detail and a stream-like water element extending from a bucket. Natural friction wear on high points and footpads reveals bright original mercury fire-gilding underneath, while authentic calcified core residue remains trapped within the deep recesses of the thick-walled casting. Measuring 25 cm high, the sculpture functions practically as a heavy paperweight. Suitable for placement on a bookshelf or a gentleman's library desk as a contemplative scholar's object, the piece integrates traditional auspicious iconography symbolizing universal peace and good fortune. The sculptural group stands steadily on four cast feet and displays detailed facial features and robes on both the figures and the elephant.

In traditional Chinese iconography, the elephant symbolises peace, strength, and good fortune, while boys represent progeny and happiness. The depiction of boys washing an elephant translates phonetically to a wish for peaceful times and good fortune.

Bronze objects from the Ming and Qing dynasties were typically cast using the lost-wax method, allowing for intricate detail. After casting, craftsmen hand-chased the surfaces to define features and applied chemical patination to achieve a deep colour.

Authentic period bronzes display smooth wear on high-touch areas, natural uneven patination, and evidence of hand-tooling rather than machine finishing. They often possess considerable weight relative to their size due to high copper content.

A dark bronze sculpture serves as a textural accent on a wooden desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. Pairing it with minimalist modern surroundings or traditional dark timber creates visual depth and historical interest.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or metal polishes, as these will strip the historical surface patina and damage the metal.
