‘Sir William Nairne, Lord Dunsinnan’ Dated 1799 by John Kay - Hand-coloured Etching Circa 1838

19th century
For Sale by Kings-Lane
Description

An authentic, early 19th-century original intaglio copperplate etching by the renowned Scottish caricaturist John Kay (1742–1826). This piece depicts the prominent Scottish advocate and judge, William Nairne, Lord Dunsinnan (1731–1811), clad in his formal judicial robes and wig.

The plate is etched with the artist's signature and date "J. Kay 1799" at the lower oval border and bears the plate index number "91".

This print was issued in the definitive 1837–1838 Edinburgh publication A Series of Original Portraits. It features exceptional line work and fine detail, enhanced by later hand-coloured translucent watercolour washes that bring the vibrant scarlet tones of the robes to life.

The print shows a distinct, heavy plate mark indentation, verifying its genuine antique intaglio printing method. It has been neatly hinge-mounted onto a contemporary, textured cream window mat board and is entirely ready for framing.

This 19th-century Georgian print is an original intaglio copperplate etching on heavy rag paper by Scottish caricaturist John Kay, depicting Sir William Nairne, Lord Dunsinnan. The artwork shows an oval portrait vignette featuring a subject in a white wig and judicial robes adorned with red elements, presented within a textured cream window mount. The physical item measures 24 cm high and 19 cm wide. In a home today, this piece suits a gentleman's library or office setting, fitting well on a narrow wall space. The authentic print carries a plate index number at the lower border and shows crisp engraving lines accompanied by translucent watercolour washes. The sturdy mount provides a clean presentation that prepares the work for framing.

A Georgian hand-coloured etching is a print produced by etching a design onto a metal plate with acid, printing the image onto rag paper, and manually applying watercolour or gouache tints to add colour to the monochrome impression.

These prints were rendered on handmade cotton or linen rag paper using oil-based printing inks, followed by hand application of natural pigment watercolours with fine sable brushes.

Authentic period etchings typically feature a visible indented plate mark surrounding the image, evidence of hand-painted watercolour washes that extend slightly beyond the printed line work, and characteristic aging or foxing on original laid paper.

Small antique portrait prints can be incorporated into curated gallery walls, displayed within bookshelves alongside hardback volumes, or hung in symmetrical pairs to add historical contrast to modern schemes.

To protect against degradation, mount the print using acid-free board and tape, frame it behind UV-filtering glass, and display it away from direct sunlight or damp environments.
