FAQs

A potboard dresser is a regional form of British kitchen cabinetry originating in the eighteenth century, characterised by an open lower shelf near floor level designed for storing large pots, pans, and copperware beneath a row of drawers and an open upper plate rack.

Regional country dressers were predominantly constructed from native hardwoods such as English oak, elm, or pine, using hand-cut dovetail joints, wooden drawer runners, and cast brass swan-neck handles or wooden knob pull hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn backboards with irregular tool marks, wooden peg joinery, natural shrinkage across wide timber boards, and uneven wear patterns around handles and lower stretchers corresponding to centuries of use.

Contrast the dark patinated oak against neutral modern plaster walls, using the upper shelves to display monochrome ceramics, modern stoneware, or glassware, while leaving the lower potboard open to maintain a sense of space.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the patination, keeping the piece positioned away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
