Oil Painting of a Scottish Military Gentleman C.1750-60 Attributed to Francis Lindo (1714–67)

18th century
Description

Francis Lindo (1714–67), Attributed – A Portrait of a Scottish Military Gentleman, Probably the Gordon Clan, Wearing a Military Tunic and Holding a Tricorne Hat c.1760

Oil painting on a mahogany panel: 8 in x 6 1/2 in. (22 cm x 16.5 cm.)

Frame: 10 7/8 x 9 3/8 in. (27.8 x 23.8 cm.)

The painting closely matches the style and dimensions of Francis Lindo’s portrait of Alexander Gordon, Lord Rockville (c. 1739–1792), sixth son of the 2nd Earl of Aberdeen. That portrait belonged to Capt. Robert Wolridge Gordon of Esslemont, Aberdeenshire; “see B&W photos”.

Similarities in pose and facial features, together with the matching dimensions would suggest that the two portraits are related and may originally have formed part of a collection of Gordon family portraits.

Alexander appears slightly older in his portrait, suggesting that our sitter may be one of his younger brothers: George Gordon (1722–1801), Gen William Gordon (1736–1816), or Col Cosmo Gordon (c. 1737–after 1783). John Gordon can be excluded, as he died young in 1727. Alternatively, the sitter may be a son of one of these men.

Francis Lindo (1714–67) was reportedly born in Isleworth, although recent art-historical research identifies him as Joseph Henri Beschey, an Antwerp-born artist who worked in Britain and Lowland Scotland under the name Francis Lindo. Between 1760 and 1762, he produced oil and crayon portraits in Lowland Scotland and Aberdeenshire, ranging from small busts to full-length works. His portraits often have considerable charm, and he may have studied under Francis Hayman (1708–1776).

This 18th century oil painting on a mahogany panel depicts a Scottish military gentleman in a three-quarter profile wearing a blue military coat trimmed with gold braid, a white stock, and a powdered hair queue. Attributed to Francis Lindo, the portrait dates from the Georgian period around 1750 to 1760 and is presented in a wide, stepped giltwood frame with visible surface wear and aged distressing to the gold finish. The panel measures 22 cm x 16.5 cm, while the frame measures 27.8 cm x 23.8 cm. Ideal for a gentleman's library or study, this traditional artwork suits placement above the mantelpiece. The muted tones of the blue tunic contrast with the bright gold braid and the neutral dark background of the portrait. The gilded frame provides a classical decorative border that complements the historic military subject matter, offering an authentic period accent for interior display in homes today.

Georgian portraiture of the mid-18th century is distinguished by formal compositions, formal dress or military uniforms, and muted backdrops that emphasise the sitters social standing. Artists focused on refined facial detail, linen collars, and metallic embroidery or braid to signal rank and status.

Paintings from this era were created using oil-based pigments applied to linen canvas or wooden panels. Frames were typically crafted from hand-carved wood or composite moulding, coated in gesso and finished with genuine gold leaf water gilding.

Authentic period paintings show age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural oxidisation on the canvas reverse, and signs of hand-carved joinery or original keys on the timber stretchers. Frame wear should demonstrate genuine age, including minor distress to the gesso and gilding layer.

An 18th-century portrait functions well as a focal point above a mantlepiece, sideboard, or integrated into a gallery wall with contrasting modern artwork. Combining classical oil portraits with minimalist or mid-century furniture creates visual depth and architectural interest.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and areas of high humidity to prevent cracking and canvas tension loss. Lightly dust the frame and surface with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
