Pair of Mid-century Architectural Ink Drawings – Spanish School, 1960'S

1940 - 1960
Description

A matching pair of original mid-century architectural drawings, executed in black ink on paper. Both pieces signed by the artist, with the signature reading as Peña or Reña and one of them is dated 1961.

The drawings depict narrow, historic European street scenes, showing architectural features typical of old Spanish stone towns, including overhead street arches, weathered masonry, steps, and wrought-iron window grates. The work relies on clean line work, cross-hatching, and dark ink washes to create contrast and depth.

Both pieces remain in their original, mid-century dark-stained wooden frames with standard backboards and are glazed. They are sold as a true pair.

Condition:

Good vintage condition. The ink work remains sharp with no apparent fading. The paper has naturally toned to a light cream colour consistent with its age. The frames show light, standard wear and minor scuffs but remain structurally sound.

This matching pair of original mid-century architectural drawings belongs to the Spanish School of the 1960s. Executed in black ink on paper, the works depict narrow historic European street scenes featuring overhead street arches, weathered masonry, steps, and wrought-iron window grates, relying on clean line work, cross-hatching, and dark ink washes. Both pieces are signed by the artist, with the signature reading as Pça or Reña and one dated 1961, and are housed in their original glazed dark-stained wooden frames with standard backboards. The paper has naturally toned to a light cream colour with sharp ink work and no apparent fading, while the frames display light wear and minor scuffs. Each drawing measures 39 cm high and 30 cm wide. They suit a gentleman's library or a narrow wall space in a home today.

During the mid-twentieth century, Spanish artists frequently documented historic urban views and traditional regional architecture using ink on paper, focusing on linear perspective, shading, and draftsmanship.

Artists typically employed Indian ink, fine nib pens, or brushes on heavy paper or card stock, often mounting the finished works with board mounts inside wooden frames.

Authentic mid-century works often show natural age-related toning on the paper, distinct ink flow lines visible under magnification, and period-appropriate signatures or dates from the era.

Monochrome architectural drawings work well hung as a paired vertical set on a narrow wall space, or integrated into a broader gallery wall alongside dark wood furniture and classic textiles.

Protect works on paper by framing them with UV-filtering glass and acid-free mats, keeping them away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity to prevent fading and foxing.
