FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that features imagery inspired by Chinese and East Asian art, often incorporating pagoda motifs, exotic landscapes, and gilded lacquered finishes.

These pieces are typically crafted from solid timber frames coated in multiple layers of dark lacquer, then decorated by hand using gold leaf, bronze powder, or coloured pigments to construct raised relief scenes.

Authentic period examples display detailed hand-painted work with natural age-related craquelure within the varnish, alongside traditional mortise and tenon joinery rather than modern modern fittings.

Pairing a dark lacquered bed frame with crisp white linen bedding and understated wall tones allows the detailed gilded motifs to serve as an artistic focal point in a guest or primary bedroom.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents, and keep the frame situated away from direct sunlight and fluctuating radiator heat to protect the delicate lacquer.
