Description

Large 1960 Royal Academy Nude Life Class Interior Oil Painting - Deidre Daines

Brief Description:

This is a superb, highly atmospheric, large original Post-War British oil on canvas, depicting a nude life model reclining in an artist’s studio or life-drawing room.

Titled “Life Drawing Class at the Royal Academy,” the composition presents a fascinating glimpse into the traditional academic studio environment. A female model reclines upon a simple mattress in the foreground, surrounded by an evocative arrangement of wooden easels, artists’ canvases, stools, chairs and suspended globe lights.

The lofty studio is illuminated from an expansive glazed skylight to the left, creating beautifully subdued, cool-toned light throughout the interior. Particularly striking is the large Old Master-style figural painting hanging prominently on the far wall, adding another layer of artistic reference to the composition.

The work has a wonderful sense of depth and stillness, with the solitary model positioned amid the apparently temporarily abandoned equipment of the life room. Its restrained palette of blue-grey, green and earthy tones is very characteristic of the mid-20th-century British figurative tradition.

Painted by Deidre Daines in 1960, the work is signed to the lower right and is presented within its substantial gilt moulded frame.

Of particular interest is the surviving Royal Academy of Arts, London label attached to the reverse, printed “From: The Royal Academy of Arts, London”, numbered 31 and handwritten “D. Daines.” This is a very appealing feature of the painting and provides an important historical association with the Royal Academy.

This is an original mid-century modern oil painting on canvas by British artist Deidre Daines, created in 1960. Executed in a muted blue-grey, green and earthy palette, the work depicts a studio life-drawing class with a reclining nude model, wooden easels, a skylight, suspended globe lights, and a framed figural painting on the wall. The canvas is housed within a stepped gilt timber moulding frame. The artwork measures 115.8 cm high, 90.1 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. It includes a signature to the lower right and a surviving Royal Academy of Arts, London label on the reverse. Suitable for domestic interiors, the piece is intended for display above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or a gentleman's library. Hanging hardware is attached to the frame for wall mounting.

Mid-20th-century British figurative painting often focused on realism, spatial observation, and the working environment of art schools. Influenced by post-war art movements, artists emphasized architectural lighting, subdued muted tones, and direct observation from life models within studio settings.

Artists during this period primarily worked with oil paints applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, occasionally using wooden panels or hardboard. Framing typically featured moulded timber or stepped wooden mouldings with painted, gilded, or linen-lined accents.

Authenticity is evaluated through artist signatures, dates, exhibition labels or stamps on the canvas reverse, correct period stretcher construction, and natural age-related canvas tension and surface oxidation.

Large-scale figurative works suit neutral walls above a credenza or sideboard, providing an understated focal point. Pairing figurative studio scenes with modernist wooden furniture or tailored architectural accents highlights the clean lines and cool colour tones of the artwork.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the surface lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and consult a professional conservator for varnish removal or surface cleaning.
