Original 1890 Print Scarborough in the Season John Bell Sarony Victorian Autotype Antique 19th Century Engraving

19th century
Description

Type of Artwork: Original Victorian Autotype Print with Period Colour

Title: Scarborough in the Season 1869

Artist: John Bell

Publisher: Sarony & Co., Scarborough and New York

Published: 1st October 1870

Process: Autotype photographic / carbon reproduction with colour

Subject: A spectacular large Victorian panoramic view of Scarborough during the fashionable seaside season, looking across the South Bay towards Scarborough Castle.

The scene is exceptionally detailed, showing the Spa complex, cliff-side hotels and terraces, Scarborough Castle, the sweeping beach and bay, sailing vessels, bathing machines, horse-drawn carriages and numerous groups of Victorian visitors promenading, riding and gathering along the shore.

The lower margin is printed “Painter John Bell”, “AUTOTYPE”, “Published Octr 1st 1870, by Sarony & Co. Scarborough and New York”, together with “Sarony & Co. Licencees of The Autotype Co.” and “Copyright Registered.”

The work is an early photographic reproduction rather than a conventional engraving, produced using the Autotype process and enhanced with period colour. It is a particularly evocative record of Scarborough at the height of its Victorian development as one of Britain’s leading seaside resorts.

Is the artwork mounted or framed? Unframed. Currently protected beneath loose clear wrapping over an old backing board, as shown.

Condition Report: Antique condition with considerable age-related wear. There are scattered spots, stains and surface marks, particularly through the sky, together with scratches, abrasions and several small areas of surface loss. Further marks and small damages are visible within the darker areas of the image. The margins show toning, spotting and general handling wear. Despite these faults, the panoramic image remains impressive and highly detailed, with much of the period colouring surviving well. Please inspect all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.

An autotype is a carbon printing process developed in the 19th century that uses pigmented gelatin to reproduce artwork and photographs with high stability and a soft tonal range.

These prints were produced using light-sensitive carbon tissue impregnated with stable pigments, transferred onto heavy rag paper mounts to ensure permanent tonal quality.

Authentic 19th-century autotypes display fine continuous tones without halftone dot patterns, distinct publisher details or printed titles in the lower margin, and age-appropriate paper oxidisation.

Mount the print in a simple dark wood frame and pair it with neutral wall tones to create a subtle historical focal point in a study, hallway, or living space.

Keep prints framed behind UV-protective glass using acid-free mounting materials, and display them away from direct sunlight or high-humidity environments to prevent foxing.
