This eighteenth-century Chinese export framed artwork presents a gouache painting on pith paper, depicting a songbird perched upon a fruiting botanical branch. The rectangular artwork is held within a black ebonised wood desktop frame fitted with glass, featuring stepped mouldings, a curved top finial, and a heavy stepped base with carved scrolled feet. The painting displays fresh, vibrant green leaves and yellow and orange fruits against a pale background. Measuring 38 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, the piece sits well atop a sideboard, console table, or desk within a study or gentleman's library. It brings a sophisticated natural history element to traditional or eclectic interiors today.

Pith paper paintings are traditional Chinese export artworks produced predominantly during the 18th and 19th centuries. The images were executed in gouache or watercolour on thin sheets cut from the inner pith of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant.

The support material is cut from spongy plant pith rather than wood-pulp paper, providing a cellular texture that absorbs gouache pigments effectively. These works were originally mounted into silk-bordered albums or framed in glazed wooden surrounds and table stands.

Authentic pieces exhibit a distinct translucent, cellular structure under magnification and frequently develop minor structural splits due to the brittle nature of aged pith. The artwork features opaque gouache application with subject matter focusing on botanical, ornithological, or trade scenes typical of Chinese export production.

A framed pith paper artwork mounted on a stand is suitable for placement on sideboards, desks, or mantelpieces. The natural history subject matter and structured framing pair well with English country house, chinoiserie, and library interiors.

Pith paper is fragile and susceptible to damage from moisture and direct sunlight. To prevent deterioration, the artwork should remain glazed under protective glass in a stable environment with controlled humidity levels.
