Prometheus Antiques has dated this Victorian Landscape Oil Painting to the Victorian era.
The depiction of the church is superb and must have been a specific building but it is unidentified. The painting is in excellent untouched condition and is signed and dated to the lower left 1897. James Elliot is a little known but recorded artist exhibiting between 1882 and 1897, he hailed from Manchester and spent time in the artist community around Bettws-y-coed in North Wales but by the time this work was created he had a London address. Elliot exhibited widely including at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists and The Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He also exhibited in Manchester and Liverpool. This work comes towards the end of his career when he was in London and with the size and scale of it, must have been one of his exhibited pieces. The painting is framed in the original superb quality gilt frame which is in excellent original condition. The whole has a wonderful presence with a great feeling of peace and tranquillity.
