Flower Fairy Watercolour ‘Love-in-the-mist’ by Marjorie L Davies

1920 - 1940
Description

A beautiful watercolour by the illustrator Marjorie Louise Davies (1906-2007) depicting flower fairies for the plant Love-in-the-mist. The work shows two fairies embracing whilst perched within the stems of the plant in the typical style of the artist. The watercolour retains the original mount and frame which is painted and textured. The condition of the work is good with the colours bright and fresh but with some browning to the paper. The piece is titled, signed and dated to the front 1946. Marjorie Louise Davies was one of Enid Blyton's favourite artists, was born in Hampstead, the only daughter of Alfred and Louise Clements. She studied at St Martin's School of Art, London, from which she was hired by the Link Studio to illustrate My Magazine, Arthur Mee's 1920s periodical for youngsters. She married John Davies in 1935 and her career was interrupted by the war when she served with the Women's Land Army at farms in Sussex. After the war, she contacted Enid Blyton about her drawings, but the writer told her not to send samples unless they were first-class, which they were, resulting in Davies illustrations appearing in the Bedside, Holiday and Flower annuals, as well as the Enid Blyton and Sunny Stories magazines. The whole is a great example of the illustrators work and of flower fairy painting.

This early 20th century watercolour painting by illustrator Marjorie Louise Davies dates to 1940 and depicts two winged flower fairies sitting among blue love-in-the-mist blossoms. The work uses watercolour and paper materials, and is set within a double mount behind glass, enclosed in a narrow gilt wood frame with a textured, painted finish in cream, blue, and gold colours. The visible details include the original handwritten title, signature, and date on the front, alongside some browning to the paper and bright, fresh paint colours. The piece measures 42.5 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 1.5 cm deep. This artwork is suited for display in a home today on a narrow wall space to add an English Country House decorative style to a hallway, study, or living room.

Originating in the early 20th century, flower fairy artwork combined precise botanical illustration with folklore imagery. Illustrators depicted fantastical winged figures alongside anatomically accurate flora, popularised through childrens literature and decorative prints.

Artists executed these works using watercolour paints on paper, which were subsequently mounted onto stiff board. Framing typically included protective glass, a card mount to prevent direct contact with the glass, and a moulded wooden or gilt frame.

Authentic period watercolours display distinct brushstrokes, subtle variations in paint density, and natural age tone on the paper surface. Original signature marks, period framing hardware, and natural light foxing on the mount also indicate historical age.

Framed watercolours can be integrated into a gallery wall alongside contemporary prints or positioned in smaller wall spaces such as alcoves and hallways. The soft colour palette pairs effectively with neutral paint schemes and natural wood accents.

Watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity to avoid fading and paper distortion. Glass should be dusted with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the frame joinery.
