Two Prints from the Tempest by Marjorie L Davies (1906-2007)

1920 - 1940
Description

A pair of prints by Marjorie L Davies (1906-2007) depicting images from a song in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The prints are from line drawings by this famous illustrator most notably of Enid Blyton’s works. One is Titled ‘Where the bee sucks’ and is signed, the other is not but shows the line ‘On a bat’s back I do fly’. The two are both in good untouched condition including the original simple painted frames and mounts. There are some nibbles to the edges of the frames. Marjorie Louise Davies was one of Enid Blyton's favourite artists, was born in Hampstead, the only daughter of Alfred and Louise Clements. She studied at St Martin's School of Art, London, from which she was hired by the Link Studio to illustrate My Magazine, Arthur Mee's 1920s periodical for youngsters. She married John Davies in 1935 and her career was interrupted by the war when she served with the Women's Land Army at farms in Sussex. After the war, she contacted Enid Blyton about her drawings, but the writer told her not to send samples unless they were first-class, which they were, resulting in Davies illustrations appearing in the Bedside, Holiday and Flower annuals, as well as the Enid Blyton and Sunny Stories magazines. This pair are lovely examples of the artist’s work and unusual being inspired by Shakespeare. C.1930

A pair of framed art prints from 1930 in the 20th century illustration style displays figurative line drawings and literary themes from Shakespeare's The Tempest. The paper and cardboard prints are set within dual mounts under glass, framed by narrow wooden painted mouldings in cream and monochrome. One piece shows the signature and title 'Where the bee sucks', while the other bears the line 'On a bat's back I do fly', presented in good untouched condition with nibbles visible along the edges of the frames. Each individual print measures 31 cm high, 23 cm wide and 1.5 cm deep. Suitable for an English country house interior, this art set hangs well on a narrow wall space in a study, hallway, bedroom or living room. The monochrome palette coordinates easily with neutral or patterned wall coverings, while the simple glazing and slim borders maintain a traditional appearance.

Early 20th-century book illustrations brought classic literary works to life through fine line drawings, etchings, and lithographs, creating collectible art prints independent of published texts.

These prints were executed on fine paper or card, produced through etching or lithographic methods, and presented in wooden frames with protective glass facing and card mounts.

Authentic period prints feature distinct printed signatures or plate marks, natural paper ageing without modern artificial whitening, and fine line detail characteristic of traditional print processes.

A vertical pair of monochrome prints works effectively hung in narrow wall alcoves, beside doorway frames, or stacked vertically on a gallery wall to introduce narrative detail.

Keep framed paper prints away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent fading and foxing. Clean the outer frame glass with a dry microfibre cloth without liquid sprays near the joinery.
