This large three-door wardrobe dates from the 1900-1920 period in an English Chinoiserie style, attributed to maker Hille for Harrods. Constructed from wood with a black and gold japanned lacquer finish, it displays intricate gilded landscapes featuring pagodas, figures and natural motifs across the three doors, complemented by decorative borders, moulding details at the top and base, and curved cabriole feet with claw elements. The interior offers a double-width section on the left with a horizontal hanging rail and coat hooks, alongside a right-hand section fitted with removable shelving and internal drawers. Measuring 190 cm high, 159 cm wide and 57 cm deep, the piece separates into four modular components comprising the top, base, single right section, and double left section. It is suited for placement in a master bedroom or dressing room to provide substantial storage capacity while serving as a statement focal point within traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Chinoiserie is a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that involves the interpretation and imitation of East Asian artistic traditions, characterised by intricate hand-painted landscapes, pagodas, and gilded decoration on lacquered surfaces.

Traditional European lacquered or japanned furniture generally features a hardwood or soft timber frame coated with multiple layers of resin-based lacquer or shellac, decorated with gold leaf, raised gesso work, and pigment details.

Authentic pieces often exhibit detailed hand-painted figures, fine age-related crazing within the varnish layers, natural oxidation on metal fittings, and traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints.

A substantial black lacquered Chinoiserie armoire serves as a dominant focal point in a bedroom or dressing room, pairing effectively with neutral wall finishes, contemporary textiles, and understated brass metal accents.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or adjacent to heat sources to prevent cracking, fading, or lifting of the delicate lacquer layers.
