Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This Queen Anne oak lowboy is an eighteenth-century English country house side table in a warm brown colour. The piece stands 77 cm high, 83 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. A single drawer is fitted to the frieze and is accented with small brass teardrop handles. The shaped apron beneath the drawer is decorated with turned drop finials, while the turned legs display detailed carved rings and rest on original bun feet. A curved X-stretcher connects the lower legs and supports a central upright finial. Natural wood grain is visible across the timber surfaces. In a contemporary home, this table works well beside the front door as a convenient surface for everyday essentials and correspondence, or functions as a compact writing desk or dressing table in a bedroom or hallway. The proportions suit narrow spaces while offering useful storage within the drawer and an open lower profile.

A lowboy is a small table with one or two tiers of drawers, originally popularised in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Britain and America. Typically used as a dressing table or side table, it features elevated legs, decorative aprons, and fine brass hardware.

Early eighteenth-century lowboys were predominantly constructed from solid native woods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood. Construction features typically include hand-cut dovetail joints, turned legs, shaped aprons, and brass tear-drop or batwing drawer pulls.

Authentic period pieces show signs of historic hand-tooling, irregular oak graining, genuine shrinkage across solid wood tops, and hand-cut dovetails. Original hardware often leaves distinctive impression marks or historic patination around the brass plates.

A lowboy functions exceptionally well as a statement side table in a living area, a hallway console, or an elegant vanity unit in a bedroom. Complementing the dark oak with clean contemporary ceramics or tailored table lamps creates an appealing textural contrast.

Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or bleaching. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish and patina.
