Large Beautiful 20th Century Dutch Windmill Landscape Oil Painting

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Artsonline
Description

Large Beautiful 20th Century Dutch Windmill Landscape Oil Painting

Brief Description:

This is a large, beautiful atmospheric vintage 20th-century oil on canvas painting depicting a tranquil Dutch waterside landscape with traditional windmills, cottages and calm reflective water.

The composition is dominated by an impressive old windmill rising above the waterside buildings, with a second windmill visible in the distance. The artist has created wonderful depth by placing the darker architecture and vegetation beneath an expansive, dramatic cloud-filled sky.

The restrained palette of soft blue-greys, creams, earthy browns and muted greens is particularly attractive, while the water has been handled beautifully with delicate horizontal highlights and reflections.

Of particular note is the artist's use of textured and impasto brushwork throughout the cottages, vegetation and principal windmill, contrasting effectively with the softer treatment of the sky and water.

The work is signed in red to the lower right and presented within a substantial and highly decorative ornate gilt frame, which complements the traditional subject exceptionally well.

Attributes:

Medium: Oil on canvas

Period: 20th Century (circa 1950-1960)

Signature: Signed lower right

Condition:

The painting remains in good vintage condition overall, presenting extremely well.

There is some fine age-related craquelure visible across areas of the painted surface, particularly within the sky, together with minor surface marks consistent with its age. These are mentioned for accuracy and form part of the painting's established vintage character.

Overall Framed Measurements:

INCHES & CENTIMETRES

Height: 31.5'' | 80 cm

Width: 43.5'' | 110.4 cm

FAQs

Dutch landscape painting originated during the seventeenth century Dutch Golden Age, focusing on realistic depictions of rural scenes, waterways, skies, and structures such as windmills. Later twentieth-century artists continued this tradition using textured brushwork and atmospheric lighting to capture European scenery.

These artworks feature oil paint applied directly onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, often built up using layered techniques or impasto. Frames from this period are commonly crafted from timber substrates decorated with moulded plaster details and finished with gold leaf or metallic paint.

Authentic paintings exhibit natural surface age, distinct artist signatures near the lower margins, and visible brush texture from individual paint layers. Examining the rear of the canvas reveals age-appropriate tone variations in the fabric, wooden stretcher bars, and period framing fixings.

A framed landscape serves as a focal anchor when positioned above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table. Pairing classical oil paintings with contemporary furniture creates a tailored contrast that elevates modern and traditional interior schemes alike.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources to prevent canvas movement and surface cracking. Dust the frame and painting gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions.
