17th Century English School Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Noblewoman

17th century
For Sale by Period Portraits
Description

Highly decorative 17th century English school portrait of a noblewoman housed in

an antique giltwood frame.

The elegant sitter is depicted bust length in a classic three-quarter turn, facing right whilst looking directly at the viewer. She wears a daring gold gown with a low-cut bodice which is constructed from heavy silk or satin fabric, showcasing dramatic folds that catch the light. A hint of delicate, white lace trim borders the chemise beneath her neckline.

Her dress is secured with ornate jewelled brooches which are further complemented by a single-strand pearl choker necklace paired with matching pearl drop earrings in a visual display of wealth favoured by upper-class women of this period.

The sitters is every inch the definition of a 'baroque belle' with her pale complexion, rosy cheeks and red lips. Her dark, voluminous and curly hair is styled into soft ringlets that frame her face, and cascade over her bare shoulders.

Sir Peter Lely dominated the portrait market of the Restoration Court (c. 1660–1685). by famously developing a commercialised, formulaic approach to painting noblewomen, certain historians have referee to this as a 'sisterhood of women' because poses and fashions were often repeated to make his sitters appear delightfully deshabille.

The attributes in this portrait align with these exact stylistic pointers, making it a very attractive work, and despite its comparatively modest size it is decorative and seductive in equal parts.

Housed in a later antique 18th century style frame it is ready to hang and enjoy, in unmolested condition.

This seventeenth-century English school oil on canvas portrait depicts a noblewoman in a bust-length format within a heavy carved gilt frame. The painting measures 75 cm high, 55 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. The sitter has dark brown hair styled in ringlet curls and wears a gold gown with a pearl necklace and drop earrings. The artwork shows carved scrollwork on the gold leaf wooden frame, alongside visible dark brown hair and a pale complexion with rosy cheeks. Suitable for display in a domestic interior, the portrait hangs above the mantel in a traditional living space or study. The composition captures the classic style of the period, presenting an antique visual anchor for a room decorated in an English country house design.

Portraiture during the 17th century in England, encompassing the Stuart and Restoration eras, was heavily influenced by continental artists. Paintings from this period typically depict aristocrats and figures of status adorned in period attire, pearl jewellery, and stylized hair.

Artists primarily utilised oil pigments bound with linseed oil on hand-woven linen canvas. Framing from or inspired by this era frequently involved carved timber finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding.

Authentic oil paintings from the 17th century demonstrate craquelure across the paint layer, hand-cut stretchers, and historical oxidisation on the timber and canvas reverse. Tool marks and original canvas joins are also common physical indicators.

An antique framed portrait serves as a focal point when positioned above a mantelpiece, console table, or within a gallery wall arrangement. Placing historical portraiture alongside modern furniture creates a balanced juxtaposition of textures and eras.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and fluctuating heat sources to prevent paint flaking or timber movement. Clean gently using a soft, dry brush, and consult a qualified art conservator for surface restoration.
