This is a particularly charming and beautifully composed late 19th-century British oil on canvas painting by Samuel Joseph Clark (1834–1912), depicting an idyllic rural farm scene with cattle, poultry and a young milkmaid.
Chickens and a wonderfully painted cockerel animate the foreground, with a traditional thatched farmhouse nestled beyond the hedgerow beneath an expansive, softly clouded sky.
Clark has captured the peaceful atmosphere of Victorian rural life beautifully, with considerable attention paid to the animals, figures and small details throughout the landscape. The warm earthy palette, open countryside and gentle narrative quality make this an especially appealing example of the artist's work.
The painting is signed “S. J. Clark” to the lower-left corner.
It is presented within a superb and highly decorative period pierced, scrolled and floral gilt-gesso frame, which complements the subject wonderfully and gives the painting considerable display presence.

Samuel Joseph Clark (1834–1912) was a British painter particularly associated with animal, farmyard and rural genre subjects. His works frequently feature cattle, horses and scenes of everyday country life, combining careful observation of animals with the picturesque landscapes and narrative detail so admired during the Victorian period.
Clark belonged to a family of artists noted for their depictions of horses and animals, and his paintings remain popular with collectors of traditional British sporting and rural art.
