An Exquisite and Rare Early 19th Century Spode Cabinet Cup and Saucer

19th century
Description

A fine and unusually decorated early 19th-century Spode porcelain cabinet cup and saucer, circa 1830.

This exceptional pair is richly decorated with a deep plum-red ground and contrasting white interiors, elaborately enhanced throughout with finely gilded foliate swags, leafy garlands and suspended lantern motifs.

The centre of both pieces is particularly striking, featuring finely hand-painted raised panels depicting exotic sea shells, surrounded by highly worked and deeply applied gilding. The combination of the unusual shell decoration, elaborate gilding and rich plum-red ground makes this an especially distinctive and decorative example of Spode porcelain.

The cup and saucer remain in very good condition, with only the slightest signs of wear to the gilded decoration commensurate with age and use.

The underside of the pieces is marked in red with the Spode name and pattern number 4525.

Measurements:

Cup: 5.5 cm high × 11.5 cm wide × 9 cm deep

Saucer: 5.5 cm high × 15 cm wide × 15 cm deep

English, circa 1830

A rare and highly decorative example of early 19th-century Spode porcelain, particularly notable for its unusual exotic shell panels and exceptional gilded decoration.

This early 19th-century Regency Spode cabinet cup and saucer consists of bone china finished with deep crimson and gold enamel and gold leaf. The set displays a scalloped rim, a scroll handle, and a black display stand, decorated with heavy gilded scrollwork and shell motifs. The cup measures 5.5 cm high by 11.5 cm wide by 9 cm deep, and the saucer measures 5.5 cm high by 15 cm wide by 15 cm deep. Suitable for display on a bookshelf, the set serves as a decorative accent in a home today. The interior surfaces are white, contrasting with the rich plum-red exterior ground, while raised panels depict exotic sea shells surrounded by intricate gilding. The underside bears a red Spode mark and pattern number 4525, accompanied by slight signs of wear to the gilded decoration.

Cabinet cups and saucers were produced during the early nineteenth century as decorative display pieces rather than for functional drinking. Often highly decorated with elaborate gilding and vibrant colour grounds, they were showcased in glass display cabinets in wealthy homes.

Early nineteenth-century English manufacturers primarily produced fine bone china, incorporating bone ash for strength and translucency. Decoration was applied using hand painting, overglaze enamel transfer, and burnished gold leaf gilding.

Authentic Regency Spode pieces often feature impressed or painted maker marks, pattern numbers in red, black, or gold on the base, highly detailed gilding, and a fine, translucent bone china body.

These decorative items are best styled inside a glass-fronted cabinet, on a mantlepiece, or atop a stack of design books on a bookshelf to highlight their detail while protecting them from dust.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding immersion for extended periods. Do not use abrasive sponges or chemical cleaners, as these will wear away the gilding and surface enamels.
