Antique 19th Century Mahogany Bowfront Chest of Drawers

A bowfront chest of drawers is a storage cabinet characterized by a convex, gently curved front surface that softened the rigid lines of traditional rectangular cabinetry during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These chests were typically constructed with solid mahogany framing, flame mahogany veneers on drawer fronts, pine or oak drawer linings, and cast brass backplate handles or wooden knobs.

Authentic period chests exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, pine or oak secondary woods, natural shrinkage marks or minor unevenness on the curved timber, and original cast brass keyhole escutcheons.

Position the piece against a neutral wall to highlight the timber grain, pairing it with contemporary artwork, a table lamp, or minimalist ceramics to balance the traditional dark wood visual weight.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, applying a quality bees wax sparingly once or twice a year, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
