A fine and atmospheric Victorian landscape by British artist Stephen Enoch Hogley depicting Borrowdale in Cumberland, within the English Lake District.

The composition presents an expansive view across the Borrowdale landscape, with a farmer and cattle travelling along a winding country path in the foreground. Pasture, mature woodland and richly coloured vegetation lead the eye towards the imposing Cumberland fells rising in the distance.

Hogley uses warm golden ochres, earthy browns, russet tones and rich greens across the foreground, contrasted by cooler blue-grey and violet tones in the distant mountains. His increasingly atmospheric handling towards the horizon creates an effective sense of depth and captures the changing light for which the Lake District is renowned.

The prominent distant fell may possibly represent Glaramara or part of the Glaramara massif. This is a considered topographical interpretation rather than a definitive identification. The wider location is supported by the surviving historic label verso recording "Borrowdale, Cumberland".

Artist

Stephen Enoch Hogley was born at Almondbury near Huddersfield in 1842. He was apprenticed to Peace Sykes and studied drawing at the Holmfirth Mechanics Institution before undertaking further study at Huddersfield.

He became known particularly for landscape painting in oils and watercolours, frequently incorporating lakes, hills, cattle and rural figures. Hogley was associated with the Yorkshire Union of Artists and became a council member in 1895.

Condition

Offered in fair antique condition consistent with age.

Light craquelure, foxing and age-related marks are present. The original gilt frame remains structurally sound with minor scuffs, wear and areas of overpainting commensurate with age.
