George II Oak & Mahogany Crossbanded Dresser with Plate Rack C.1730

A handsome and substantial George II oak dresser and plate rack, dating to circa 1730, of particularly good colour and extensively decorated with contrasting mahogany crossbanding. The upper section is surmounted by an architectural inverted breakfront stepped cornice above a substantial open plate rack with four shelves, flanked by four small cupboards. The projecting ends and strongly moulded cornice give the rack considerable architectural presence, particularly at over two metres wide. The dresser base is arranged with three drawers across the top above three further central drawers, flanked by a pair of panelled cupboards. The projecting canted corners continue the architectural treatment of the upper section, while the whole is raised on shaped bracket feet.

Of particular note is the extensive use of mahogany crossbanding. This frames each of the drawer fronts and continues around both the perimeter of the lower cupboard doors and the individual panels within them, creating an attractive contrast with the richly coloured oak. The drawers are fitted with shaped brass backplate handles of appropriate early Georgian design. These are later replacements, with evidence of previous handle positions remaining visible.

The dresser has developed a particularly attractive warm colour and surface through nearly three centuries of use. Combined with its generous scale, architectural proportions and extensive crossbanded decoration, it is a particularly decorative example of an early Georgian dresser while retaining excellent practical storage and display space.

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition, with the marks, wear, historic repairs and alterations expected of a piece in daily use since circa 1730. There are various age-related marks, knocks, scratches and areas of wear throughout, together with some minor losses and historic repairs to veneers and mouldings. There are some old splits to the sides of the base and an historic repair to the right-hand front foot towards the centre of the dresser. The four small cupboard doors flanking the plate rack show some age-related movement and warping, most noticeably to the lower left-hand door. There is evidence of historic woodworm within the base, predominantly to the internal cupboard shelving, and the backboards are replacements. The brassware has also been replaced, with the dresser fitted with shaped brass backplate handles of an appropriate early Georgian design. Witness marks from previous handle positions remain visible in places. There are further minor age-related losses, repairs and irregularities consistent with the considerable age of the piece. These do not detract significantly from its overall appearance and the dresser presents particularly well, retaining very good colour and an attractive patina. The piece is structurally sound and ready for use.
