Antique Chromatic Variable Pitch Pipe Tuning Whistle Original Metal Case C.1920

An unusual early 20th-century chromatic variable pitch pipe or tuning whistle, complete with its original fitted metal case.

The cylindrical nickel-plated metal body is fitted with a fan-shaped adjustable selector engraved with musical notes from F through G, A, B, C, D and E to F. By moving the selector to the required note and blowing through the pipe, the instrument produces a reference pitch for tuning or establishing a starting note.

Variable pitch pipes of this type were used by singers and instrumentalists before electronic tuners became commonplace. Closely comparable examples were manufactured in Central Europe, particularly Czechoslovakia and Germany, during the early decades of the 20th century.

The pitch pipe is housed in its original shaped hinged metal case, finished black externally with a red-painted interior. The case shows considerable age-related rubbing, oxidation and loss to the red finish, while the pitch pipe itself has surface wear, tarnishing and minor marks consistent with use.

The exact maker is not presently identified and no country stamp is visible in the supplied photographs, so the origin is described conservatively as Central European, probably Czechoslovak.
