Description

An attractive 18th Century oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, executed in the British School manner.

Set within a painted feigned oval aperture, the sitter is depicted half-length in mid-Georgian attire. Dating to circa 1720–1750, his powdered bob-wig with neat side rolls, high white linen stock, cravat, and unbuttoned olive-green coat reflect the height of period fashion. The warm brown mantle draped casually across his shoulder incorporates classical drapery - a popular 18th-century artistic convention used to give the sitter a timeless, dignified quality. The painting is housed in a decorative moulded gilt and silvered frame.

Condition: The canvas has been professionally relined and is in good, stable order with fine age craquelure throughout.
