Antique Japanese Meiji Bronze Hibachi Jardiniere Mixed Metal Birds Kabuto C.1890

A large and particularly decorative Japanese Meiji-period bronze hibachi or brazier, dating to approximately 1880–1900, extensively decorated with applied mixed-metal bird and floral relief and unusual samurai kabuto-inspired side mounts.

Of substantial circular form, the vessel has a broad everted rim, deep cylindrical interior, rounded body and spreading pedestal foot.

The exterior is divided into a series of large shaped reserves containing finely modelled birds amongst flowering branches, pine and blossom, including pairs of perched birds and long-beaked water birds rendered in raised relief.

The applied decoration has a contrasting silver-grey tone against the warmer bronze body, creating the distinctive mixed-metal effect associated with decorative Japanese metalwork of the Meiji period. The exact composition of the contrasting metal has not been tested and is therefore conservatively described as silver-toned mixed metal rather than solid silver.

Particularly unusual are the projecting side mounts, which appear to be modelled in the form of stylised samurai kabuto helmets, complete with suspended cord and bow motifs beneath. These martial details give the vessel an additional level of interest beyond the more commonly encountered bird-and-flower decorated Meiji bronzes.

Although such vessels are frequently described today as jardinières or cachepots, the deep interior, absence of drainage and extensive darkened deposits strongly suggest that this example was originally intended as a hibachi, the traditional Japanese charcoal brazier. Similar Meiji bronze vessels are catalogued in both the hibachi and jardinière categories.

The bronze displays an attractive naturally aged surface with warmer golden-brown tones, darker patination within the recessed decoration and age-related oxidation. The interior retains substantially darker patination and deposits consistent with historic use.
