17th Century Leaded Bronze Cauldron Somerset Type Antique Bronze Cooking Pot C.1650

A substantial and highly decorative 17th-century English leaded-bronze tripod cauldron, probably of West Country manufacture, dating to approximately the mid-to-late 17th century.

Of traditional bellied form, the vessel stands on three short feet and is fitted with a pair of angular loop handles beneath a broad everted rim. The heavy cast construction, visible mould seams, irregular hand-finished surfaces and naturally developed patina are characteristic of early English domestic bronze work.

The cauldron has an attractive dark brown-black surface with warmer bronze tones showing through on areas of historic wear. Numerous scratches, casting imperfections and surface irregularities remain visible, adding considerable character and providing evidence of its long working life.

Large leaded-bronze cauldrons of this type were important household vessels during the 16th and 17th centuries, traditionally used for cooking, brewing, heating water and general domestic preparation. Closely related examples were produced by several English foundries, including workshops operating in Somerset and elsewhere in the West Country. No identifiable founder’s mark has been confirmed on this example, so the regional attribution is deliberately given as probably West Country rather than assigned to a particular foundry.

The three feet appear to have been historically reduced through wear or alteration, something frequently encountered on surviving early cauldrons. Historic casting seams and surface flaws are also visible, together with areas that may represent old working repairs or reinforcement.

Condition: Good genuine antique condition considering its considerable age. Extensive historic surface wear, scratches, patination, casting irregularities and marks consistent with centuries of use. The three feet are reduced, probably historically, and there are old casting flaws and possible historic localised repairs. No obvious major recent restoration is apparent from inspection of the photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

A very attractive survivor of early English domestic metalware, with excellent country-house character and strong sculptural presence.
