Antique Chinese White Metal Lotus Dish Qianlong Mark C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Chinese White Metal Lotus Dish with Qianlong Mark, c.1920

An attractive and substantial Chinese white-metal dish, probably dating from the early 20th century and bearing an apocryphal four-character Qianlong reign mark.

Of distinctive lobed flower-head form, the dish is extensively decorated with eight radiating stylised foliate sprays surrounding a raised central lotus or chrysanthemum-form rosette.

The decoration combines bold relief work with finely detailed floral ornament across the recessed ground, surrounded by multiple concentric stepped borders. The contrasting polished high points and darker recessed areas give the decoration considerable depth and definition.

The reverse is similarly decorated with recessed foliate motifs and bears a four-character mark reading:

乾隆年製

Qianlong Nian Zhi

“Made during the Qianlong reign.”

The Qianlong Emperor reigned from 1736–1795; however, Qianlong reign marks were also used on later Chinese decorative works. This example is therefore conservatively catalogued as an early 20th-century piece bearing an apocryphal Qianlong mark, rather than as a Qianlong-period object.

The substantial construction is particularly notable for its relatively small size, weighing approximately 150 grams at only 10cm diameter.

Chinese export metalware from this era frequently incorporates traditional motifs such as lotus blossoms, dragons, and bamboo, often bearing apocryphal reign marks from earlier dynasties like Qianlong to honour historical craftsmanship.

These items were commonly crafted from paktong or nickel-silver alloys that mimic solid silver, providing durability while accommodating intricate repousse and chased ornamentation.

Authentic pieces feature hand-chased or hand-stamped detailing, character marks stamped into the base, and genuine surface patination that develops naturally over decades.

A decorative metal dish functions as a catch-all tray on an entryway console, an accent piece on a coffee table, or styled within a display cabinet alongside ceramics.

Maintain the aged patina by dusting gently with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that strip the historical surface oxidisation.
