Large Chinese Xiuyan Jade Carving Lotus Cash Coin Auspicious Foliage 1.6kg 26cm

1920 - 1940
Description

LARGE CHINESE XIUYAN JADE CARVING – LOTUS, CASH COIN & AUSPICIOUS FOLIAGE

A large and impressive Chinese carved Xiuyan jade / serpentine hardstone group, extensively carved and pierced with lotus, seed pods, scrolling foliage and a prominent traditional Chinese cash-coin motif.

The carving is accompanied by its Chinese factory identification label, naming the Xingwang Jade Ware Factory, Xiuyan County, Liaoning Province, China (辽宁省岫岩县兴旺玉器厂), together with handwritten reference CA-85.

Xiuyan County in Liaoning is one of China’s historic centres of jade and hardstone carving and is particularly associated with the material traditionally known as Xiuyan jade.

THE CARVING

Worked from attractive pale celadon to yellow-green translucent stone, the sculpture forms an elaborate three-dimensional composition of overlapping leaves, flowers, lotus seed heads and curling stems.

Extensive pierced openwork allows light through the composition and gives considerable depth. Individual leaves are finely incised with veins, while the seed pods have carefully defined seeds.

At the centre is a large circular Chinese cash coin with its traditional square aperture. Combined with the lotus and abundant seed-bearing plants, the composition evokes traditional themes of prosperity, abundance and good fortune.

At approximately 26cm high, 21cm wide and 1.6kg, this is a substantial carving with excellent display presence.

FITTED HARDWOOD STAND

Presented on a dark fitted hardwood stand, shaped to accommodate the irregular base of the stone, with moulded border, pierced decorative apron and short feet.

FACTORY LABEL / PROVENANCE

Of particular interest is the surviving Chinese identification label bearing:

辽宁省岫岩县兴旺玉器厂

Xingwang Jade Ware Factory, Xiuyan County, Liaoning Province

and handwritten reference CA-85.

The label provides useful provenance connecting the carving directly with Xiuyan County, Liaoning Province, rather than it being simply an unidentified Chinese hardstone carving. It will be supplied with the sculpture and should be retained with it.

MATERIAL

Described as Xiuyan jade in the recognised Chinese traditional/trade sense. Much green Xiuyan material is gemologically serpentine-group stone rather than jadeite. This carving has not been laboratory tested and is conservatively described as Xiuyan jade / probably serpentine hardstone.

This Chinese carved Xiuyan jade group dates from 1940 and follows traditional Chinese styles. The pale celadon to yellow-green serpentine hardstone sculpture depicts lotus flowers, seed pods, openwork scrolling foliage, and a central cash coin with a square aperture. Pierced openwork and incised leaf veins give depth to the composition, which rests upon a dark fitted hardwood stand featuring a moulded border, a pierced decorative apron, and short feet. The piece includes a factory identification label from the Xingwang Jade Ware Factory in Xiuyan County, Liaoning Province, marked with the reference CA-85. Measuring 26 cm high and 21 cm wide, this heavy decorative carving serves as a striking display item for a sideboard top in a home. The sculpture exhibits good overall vintage condition with minor nibbles and small chips on exposed extremities due to its intricate pierced construction. The fitted wooden base provides secure placement for the irregular stone base while complementing the traditional hardstone artwork.

Xiuyan jade, quarried in Liaoning province, has been utilised in Chinese lapidary arts for centuries. Carvings featuring lotus flowers and cash coins traditionally symbolise purity, harmony, and prospective wealth within classical Chinese iconography.

Traditional Chinese carvings utilise nephrite, jadeite, or serpentine minerals such as Xiuyan jade, worked using rotary drills and abrasives. Artisans employ openwork techniques, relief carving, and intricate piercing to form detailed foliage and floral motifs.

Authentic carved stone pieces display natural colour variations, internal inclusions, and subtle tool marks from manual finishing. Genuine stone feels cool to the touch and possesses characteristic translucency under direct illumination, contrasting with moulded glass or resin substitutes.

A decorative stone carving functions effectively as a focal point on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or within a curated shelf display. Positioning the piece where natural light illuminates its translucency highlights the detailed openwork alongside contemporary or traditional furnishings.

Clean the stone sculpture using a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dust from intricate pierced areas. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, steam, or ultrasonic baths, and keep the carved hardwood base conditioned with natural beeswax.
