Large Chinese Qing Archaistic Bronze Ding Tripod Censer with Taotie Decoration 30cm

A substantial Chinese archaistic bronze tripod vessel or censer (ding), probably Qing dynasty, inspired by the ancient ritual bronzes of the Shang and Zhou periods.

The rounded body is raised on three tall columnar legs and surmounted by a pair of imposing upright loop handles. The body is decorated with a broad archaistic register of stylised taotie masks surrounded by dense leiwen or thunder-pattern ornament.

Ding vessels were among the most important forms of ancient Chinese ritual bronze. Their distinctive shapes and decoration were subsequently revived by Chinese craftsmen, becoming particularly admired by scholars, antiquarians and collectors during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

This substantial example has a particularly strong architectural form, with its elongated legs, large handles and dark patinated surface giving it considerable decorative presence.

Condition: Good antique condition with surface wear, patination and casting irregularities consistent with age. There is an old repair/reinforcement to one leg at its junction with the body. Interior and underside show expected wear and oxidation. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition report.
