Unusual Victorian Blonde Mahogany Wellington Chest with Candle Sconce Mounts, Circa 1860

Description

An unusual Victorian mahogany Wellington chest, dating from the mid-19th century, circa 1860.

Of narrow upright proportions, the chest is constructed in particularly attractive pale or “blonde” mahogany, with five graduated drawers retaining their turned wooden handles. The drawers are enclosed by the traditional hinged locking stile to one side (key lacking)

The chest has a moulded cornice above and stands on a moulded plinth base. Of particular interest are the decorative metal mounts to either side of the upper section, fitted to receive removable candle sconces — an unusual and charming feature rarely encountered on Wellington chests.

The drawer construction, including the dovetailed joints and oak secondary timber visible in the photographs, is consistent with good quality 19th-century cabinet work.

A handsome and highly practical piece of Victorian furniture, with an unusually light colour and distinctive candle-sconce fittings.
