Mellors and Kirk Fine Art and Antiques, Nottingham, offered this exact painting as Lot 718 on 14 January 2021. It was catalogued as The Hon John Collier OBE 1850 to 1934, Portrait of a Lady Knitting Seated in a Green Armchair, signed in red, oil on canvas, 103 by 81.5 cm and in the original frame by Richard Turley.

We adopt the more conservative attribution Attributed to John Maler Collier while recording the previous auction attribution as part of the paintings attribution history.
Comparative research has identified an interesting connection with Colliers documented 1893 portrait of Lady Laing, Theresa Talbot Laing 1831 to 1913. That separate portrait also depicts Lady Laing engaged in needlework.

Her age in 1893 is compatible with the apparent age of the present sitter. However, no documentary evidence has yet been located proving that this sitter is Lady Laing. The identification is therefore presented only as a possibility.
