19th C French School - The Snail & the Kittens

19th century
Description

A great painting, oil on canvas, of a cat and its kittens watching a snail.

I like the fact it’s not a pretty depiction of cats, but a characterful rendering of our feline friends, the mother looking straight at us almost menacing warning us to not get any closer to her litter!

Signed bottom left hand side.

French circa 1880.

Height 46cm. Width 55cm

Declaration

Branching Out Antiques has dated this 19th Century Kitten Painting to the 19th Century.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French genre painting frequently depicted realistic, everyday scenes, focusing on domestic life, natural studies, and intimate animal subjects. Artist groups during this period emphasised naturalism, detailed brushwork, and subtle light play on textured surfaces.

Artists in this era typically worked with oil pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil, applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were often made of hand-carved wood with gilded composition ornament.

Authentic paintings from this period often display natural craquelure across the paint layer, aged wooden stretcher bars, and hand-tacked canvas edges on the reverse. Patina, darkening varnish, and signs of historic conservation work also indicate original age.

A period animal painting adds historical texture when hung above a modern sideboard or layered within a contemporary gallery wall. Pairing dark oil paintings with muted walls and natural wood furniture balances traditional artwork with modern aesthetics.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent canvas warping and paint cracking. Surface dust should be removed gently using a soft, dry artist brush rather than chemical liquid cleaners.
