Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this Black Forest Walnut Sculpture to the 1890s.

The scene depicts a large bear rearing aggressively onto its hind legs as it attacks a forest worker, dressed in the characteristic rural costume of the period. The man fiercely defends himself, plunging a sword into the bear with one hand while forcefully pressing his other hand into the animal’s eye.

The figures are set upon a highly naturalistic base, skilfully carved in the form of a fallen tree trunk amongst rugged boulders. The dynamic movement and expressive features of both man and beast are particularly striking, capturing the violence and urgency of the encounter with remarkable realism.

Exceptionally finely carved in walnut, the group displays an abundance of naturalistic detail, together with a rich colour and beautifully developed patination consistent with age.
