Small George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers with Brushing Slide, Circa 1800

19th century
Description

A charming small George III mahogany chest of drawers, dating to circa 1800.

Of particularly useful compact proportions, the chest has a rectangular moulded top with a well-figured mahogany centre and contrasting crossbanded border. Beneath is a pull-out brushing slide, above four graduated long drawers, the drawer fronts displaying attractive figuring and further crossbanded detail.

The drawers are fitted with brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons, and the chest is raised on traditional bracket feet.

A very practical and appealing Georgian chest, its unusually small proportions making it particularly suitable for use as a bedside chest, lamp table or storage piece where space is limited.

The chest is offered in largely untouched country-house condition, with various marks, knocks, scratches and wear commensurate with its age and use.

Circa 1800.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III chest of drawers dates from the reign of King George III (17601820) and features a structured wooden frame housing horizontal drawers. The inclusion of a brushing slidea pull-out wooden tray situated directly above the top drawerwas originally designed to facilitate the brushing, folding, or laying out of garments.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany timber, valued for its rich grain and stability. Structural hallmarks include hand-cut dovetail joints on oak or pine drawer linings, cast brass swan-neck handles, keyhole escutcheons, and straight or shaped bracket feet.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, slightly irregular hand-cut dovetails, and authentic footprints or shadows from original hardware. Drawer bottoms typically feature pine or oak lining boards running parallel or perpendicular to the front, secured with hand-forged nails or wooden pegs.

A Georgian mahogany chest works effectively as a functional focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living space paired with contemporary artwork or architectural lamps. Deep timber tones provide visual weight that balances well against light neutral paint schemes and natural woven textiles.

Regular dusting with a clean, dry microfibre cloth along the grain is recommended. To maintain the surface finish and prevent drying, keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice annually.
