This framed artwork from the 1960s takes the form of a pastel on paper drawing depicting three black Pekingese dogs against a light blue background. The composition shows two adult dogs and a puppy resting amongst a subtle pagoda motif, rendered by the canine artist Mary Browning within a giltwood frame. The palette relies on stark black figures contrasted with soft pastel blue tones and touches of white. Materials include pastel, paper, glass, and giltwood. The framed dimensions measure 76 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Positioned in an English Country House design style, this piece sits well above a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or study. The artwork brings character to residential interiors through its canine study and traditional framing. Owners place the framed drawing on interior walls where the light blue background complements surrounding decor.

Canine portraiture gained widespread popularity in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly following the introduction of Pekingese dogs to Europe from Imperial China. Artists frequently depicted these lap dogs to signify status, refinement, and a fondness for exotic breeds.

Pastel portraits were created using dry pigment sticks applied to heavy paper or board. They were typically sealed under glass within giltwood or timber frames to protect the delicate, unfixed dust particles from moisture and abrasion.

Authentic pastel drawings display soft layering, subtle pigment blending, and natural tonal transitions on period paper. Original pieces are framed behind glass with period-appropriate mounting and exhibit light foxing or paper discolouration consistent with age.

A framed canine portrait works well integrated into a gallery wall, positioned above a side console, or placed within a home library setting. Pairing traditional animal artwork with contemporary furniture creates a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Pastel drawings must remain sealed behind glass with acid-free mountboard to prevent fading and dust accumulation. Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to protect the paper substrate.
