Art Deco Sycamore Chest of Drawers by Hille

1900 - 1920
Description

A stylish and extremely well made Art Deco sycamore chest of drawers by Hille. This was made in England, it dates from the 1920’s.

The quality is fantastic, this is a very useful and slim size with plenty of storage space in the many drawers. The handles are beautifully designed with a double helix motif, they all run smoothly and have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The sycamore colour tones and grain patterns are gorgeous, this has lovely walnut banding on the edges which gives a lovely contrast.

We have had this stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is excellent throughout.

We also have the matching dressing table and pair of bedside cabinets that came with this, seen listed under our other items for sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco sycamore furniture from the 1930s is defined by light-toned, highly figured veneers, clean geometric silhouettes, and minimal surface ornamentation. High-end makers often paired pale sycamore with contrasting dark timber borders or subtle architectural details to emphasise proportion.

Pieces from this era typically feature hardwood framing with fine timber veneers such as sycamore or walnut. Drawers feature hand-cut or machine dovetail jointing, solid drawer linings, and turned wooden or phenolic resin handles.

Authentic pieces by Hille often feature manufacturer stamps, metal badges, or paper labels inside drawers or on the reverse panel. Identification also relies on examining the quality of veneer matching, dovetail drawer construction, and specific 1930s design details.

A tallboy functions well as vertical storage in a bedroom, dressing space, or hallway. Style the top surface with low-profile ceramic vessels, framed monochromatic prints, or a contemporary table lamp to balance its proportions.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber discolouration or veneer lifting, and apply a clear neutral beeswax sparingly along the grain.
