Antique George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

A fine late 18th-century George III mahogany chest of drawers of elegant form and superb quality. The well-figured rectangular top with a moulded edge sits above two short and three long graduated drawers all fitted with original brass swan-neck handles and brass escutcheons.

Each drawer is oak-lined with hand-cut dovetail joints indicative of fine Georgian craftsmanship. The chest stands on shaped bracket feet and retains a beautifully rich colour and lustrous patina developed over more than two centuries.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Furniture from the George III period, spanning 1760 to 1820, is recognised for its classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and extensive use of imported solid mahogany. Standard designs feature clean geometric outlines, functional drawer arrangements, and cast brass hardware.

Primary surfaces were constructed from dense mahogany, valued for its rich grain and stability. Secondary woods such as deal (pine) or oak were typically utilized for drawer linings and back panels, paired with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass fittings with period-appropriate fixing marks, and secondary wood linings. Variations in timber shrinkage over time and hand-planed back boards also indicate period construction.

A classic mahogany chest functions as a grounding focal point when positioned against contemporary neutral walls. Pairing the dark timber with modern artwork, stone accessories, or soft textiles creates a balanced contrast in living rooms, hallways, or bedrooms.

Maintain timber moisture by placing the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve the wood finish and patina.
