Thomas W. Lascelles – Artist Biography

Thomas W. Lascelles was a British artist, engraver and landscape painter active during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Lascelles exhibited in London during the late 19th century and developed a particular interest in wooded landscapes and the effects of sunlight filtering through trees. His recorded subjects include Burnham Beeches and Epping Forest, placing his work firmly within the British tradition of naturalistic woodland painting.

Alongside his paintings, Lascelles worked professionally as an engraver and illustrator, with examples of his graphic work surviving in institutional collections and period publications.

Recorded paintings include Sunlight in the Wood, depicting two figures walking along a path through dense woodland, and Victoria Beeches, Epping Forest.

His landscapes are characterised by carefully observed trees and vegetation, strong contrasts between shaded woodland and illuminated distance, and small figures used to provide scale and atmosphere.

During the 19th century, British landscape painters focused on realistic, atmospheric depictions of nature, heavily influenced by naturalism and the Romantic movement. These works frequently featured dense forests, rural pathways, and subtle play of light through tree canopies.

Artists typically executed these works using oil pigments on stretched linen canvas or wooden panels. Frames from this era were traditionally crafted from carved timber, plaster composition mouldings, and finished with gold leaf gilded surfaces.

Authentic period paintings display natural craquelure patterns across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the back of the canvas or timber panel, and signs of aged varnish. Artist signatures and original period frames with hand-applied gilding further support authenticity.

A traditional landscape painting adds depth and character when positioned above a mantelpiece or a dining room sideboard. Pairing dark framed artwork with neutral contemporary walls creates a sophisticated focal point.

Keep oil paintings out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent pigment fading and canvas warping. Lightly dust the frame and surface with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; avoid water or chemical solvents entirely.
