Late Qing to Republic Period (circa 19th/early 20th century)
Expertly carved from a dense, heavy branch of natural Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum), this captivating Chinese figural group depicts the jovial monk Budai seated in relaxed contemplation with his characteristic prominent belly, beaming smile, and a large treasure sack slung over his shoulder. The carver has brilliantly exploited the organic contours and natural weight of the raw branch, integrating inherent surface recesses and textural flow lines directly into the dynamic drapery of the robes. The material exhibits a magnificent, deep oxblood red saturation across its primary viewing planes, complemented by natural pinprick formations and visible concentric growth rings at the unpolished base.

Overall very good and stable condition with a warm, appealing handling patina. The carving has been kept completely honest and un-restored.
Condition Note: There is a minor, dry chip to the lower right rear edge of the base exposing the creamy-white calcareous inner core, accompanied by natural branch voids and organic fissures inherent to the raw material.
