Description

A fine antique porcelain presentation cup and matching saucer produced by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory (KPM), Berlin, circa 1840. Made in high-quality hard-paste porcelain, the elegant flared cup is decorated with rich burnished and polished gilding on a white ground, complemented by a fully gilt interior, matching gilt handle and finely moulded beaded borders. The front displays the German inscription, "Nie trübe Bitterkeit die Schale Deines Lebens" ("May bitterness never fill the cup of your life "), indicating that the service was intended as a commemorative or presentation piece rather than everyday tableware.

Founded by King Frederick II of Prussia in 1763, KPM became the official porcelain manufactory of the Prussian royal court and remained one of Europe's foremost producers of luxury porcelain throughout the nineteenth century. The underglaze blue sceptre together with the iron-red imperial orb and KPM mark confirm the factory's production.
