The crispness and bright original colours seen in this small portrait by George Engleheart is testament to the unwavering skill of the artist. Dating to the early years of his long career, it has been painstakingly painted capturing every detail of the sitter’s countenance and costume conveying too his beguiling air of confidence.

The portrait is set in a gold bracelet style frame designed to be worn with pride by this young officer’s wife or sweetheart. The addition of a hanger enables it to be worn nowadays as a pendant.

George Engleheart (1750-1829) ranks amongst the most talented of the artists that were working during the Georgian heyday of portrait miniature painting. During his career he painted over 4,800 miniature portraits with 1788 being a particularly busy year for him with more than 220 completed commissions.
