19th Century French Wrought Iron Garden Daybed

19th century
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

An exceptionally charming 19th-century French wrought iron garden daybed.

Featuring an elegantly curved, ergonomic silhouette, the piece is defined by its intricate scrollwork frame, and twisted iron detailing. The bed base is constructed from flexible iron straps supported by tension springs to offer comfortable suspension.

The ironwork exhibits a wonderful, naturally aged rust patina accrued over decades, giving it immense character.

It comes complete with a bespoke tufted, soft-hued striped fabric cushion in muted tones of terracotta, gold, and cream. Handed stuffed with carded white lambswool, to add comfort and usability to a wonderful, interesting antique sun lounger.

Condition: Offered in strong, structurally sound antique condition. The iron frame retains a natural rust patina consistent with age and outdoor exposure.

Measurements: Length 189cm x Height 56cm x Width 64cm (approx.)

Wool has long been accepted as an environmentally positive fibre choice with a number of benefits, such as being 100% natural, renewable, biodegradable and recyclable.

We are increasingly aware of our climate impact and are putting this at the heart of our approach, which affects the choice of materials we use to make our bespoke textile cushions.

From the raw material stage on a farm to driving the adoption of cleaner wool processes and technologies, wool offers the opportunity to create high quality, durable, comfortable and beautiful products that have been created with the land and biodiversity in mind.

As a natural fibre, wool does not shed microplastics which can negatively affect ocean health. Scientific studies show that wool is biodegradable in both land and marine environments.

Not to mention that it is thermo-regulating, is naturally fire-retardant, hypoallergenic, antibacterial, easy to care for, and can be repaired and enjoyed for years and years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nineteenth-century French wrought iron garden daybed is an outdoor reclining lounger constructed from hand-forged iron, popularised during the nineteenth century for country estates, parks, and domestic gardens.

These daybeds were fabricated using hand-forged iron bars that were heated, shaped, and joined with rivets or collars, often incorporating scrollwork side panels, curved slats, and functional metal wheels for mobility.

Authentic period pieces feature visible hand-forged joinery, such as riveted connections and subtle hammer marks, natural surface patination or light oxidation, and heavy structural weight compared to modern reproductions.

Place the lounger in a sunroom, conservatory, or garden terrace adorned with weather-resistant cushions, neutral linen throws, and surrounding potted plants to contrast the dark metallic frame.

Preserve the iron frame by regularly dusting the surface, applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect against rust, and storing the item indoors or under protective cover during extreme weather.
